In addition to our instrumental tuition, TMS offers a range of group classes specialising in musicianship skills and theory. These classes are designed to supplement and support the student’s practical studies. Tuition in musicianship and theory is recommended for students of all ages, whether they are studying classical, traditional, jazz, rock or popular instruments. It is also essential for anyone wishing to take grade examinations past intermediate level.

Group Courses

Our group courses are divided into levels of ability to insure that each student receives the suitable tuition.

Music Introductory is one of our group theory classes dedicated to beginners. This classes is designed to introduced the essential elements of music theory such as reading and writing musical notation, as well as elementary grammar. Students learn the basics and more (treble clefs, note values, time & key signatures, solfa, scale construction, frequently used terms & signs). While a whole lot of ground is covered over the course and homework is given, Music Introductory is both enjoyable and student-friendly. This course is recommended for ages 7 - 11 years.

This course is recommended as a supplement course for those who are beginning and instrument at the school as well as students who are already singing or playing but haven’t learnt to read music. No previous musical experience is required for Music Introductory.

Our additional musicianship skills and theory classes ascend according to grade level. All students from Musicianship Grade Ⅰ and onwards have the opportunity to complete music theory grade examinations with recognised exam boards including London Trinity Guildhall and Associated Board.

Junior & Leaving Certificate Courses

The higher level music theory offered is divided into One-Year and Two-Year courses designed to prepare the students for Junior and/or Leaving Certificate Music.

Our One-Year course is designed for students intending to sit their Junior Certificate Exam. It is also recommended that students who wish to sit Leaving Certificate exam, but have not completed the Junior Certificate course or exam, use the One-Year course as a preliminary course in preparation for entry to our Two-Year course dedicated to Leaving Certificate Music.

Our Two-Year course is designed to cover all aspects of the Essential Listening and Composing Activities in preparation for the completion of Leaving Cert. Music exam. This course can also be used as preparation for further Third Level Music studies.
